chinita`s day

Today is Chinita's day! What a Day! Let's celebrate our lady of the Rosary of Chiquinquira and visit her at her house La Basilica. Let's adore her and ask her to protect us and look after us.
November 18th is a very important day in our state. Today there will be many activities all around the state and specially here in Maracaibo. People will remember and rejoice in Chinita's honor.

The month of November is of special significance to the people of Zulia, because for the same are held celebrations in honor of the Chinita (equivalent of guajirita Zulia) or Lady of Chiquinquira. It is for this reason that these days, the bagpipe sounds with particular frenzy and joy throughout the Zulia. Of the many festivities in honor of the Virgin, perhaps the most impressive is the so-called Sunrise Piper, in which the people of Maracaibo is assembled on the morning of day 18 in the courtyard of the Basilica, to sing to the Mañanitas and Chinita Happy Birthday.

According to tradition Zulia, Maracaibo La Chinita arrived on the waves of the lake. The story goes that one day in 1749, just a simple woman washing clothes on the shores of Lake Maracaibo, when suddenly he saw floating a thin wooden board, which picked up thinking it might be useful to hide the jar water that was in the corridor of his house. The next morning when the coffee was brewing, she heard a knock as if someone was calling. He went to see what was happening and was overwhelmed with astonishment at the planchette shining and appearing in it, the image of Our Lady of Chiquinquira. For this reason, the woman shouted miracle! Miracle!, So hence came the name of the current Miracle on Lake Avenue, where was the house of the washer. After what happened, many people came to witness the prodigy, becoming by this humble house of the woman in a place of veneration of the Virgin by many believers.

This game have been played on this day since 1969. There have been 38 games and "Las Aguilas" have won 19 times. Also, on this day the Luis Aparicio Award is given to the best baseball players in Venezuela. Johan Santana, Magglio Ordóñez y Oswaldo Guillen, have been awarded with it. This year, Francisco Rodríguez, Carlos Zambrano y Omar Vizquel will receive their Luis Aparicio Awards. Congratulations to this wonderful Venezuela baseball players.

Another big thing in the Feria is the bull fight (La Corrida de Toros)... I personally don't like it but a lot of people like going to the bullfight ring and yell "Ole". This is a tradition that comes from Spain and in my opinion it is horrible... I'm against torture and violence. But that's just me.

Now, what's your opinion about our fair? Did you enjoy our fair this year? Tell us what you did to enferiarte? Where did you go? how was it? What did you like the most? What you didn't like... if there's something you didn't like...Looking forward to reading all the stories from this year celebration. And Chinita....... Gloria a ti casta Señora! Happy Day!I cannot tell you how much I enjoyed working on this posting in honor to my chinita!

Halloween (hăl'əwēn', häl'-), Oct. 31, the eve of All Saints' Day, observed with traditional games and customs. The word comes from medieval England's All Hallows' eve (Old Eng. hallow="saint"). However, many of these customs predate Christianity, going back to Celtic practices associated with Nov. 1, which was Samhain (sä'wĭn), the beginning of winter and the Celtic new year. Witches and other evil spirits were believed to roam the earth on this evening, playing tricks on human beings to mark the season of diminishing sunlight. Bonfires were lit, offerings were made of dainty foods and sweets, and people would disguise themselves as one of the roaming spirits, to avoid demonic persecution. Survivals of these early practices can be found in countries of Celtic influence today, such as the United States where children go from door to door in costumes demanding "trick or treat."

Halloween had its origins in the festival of Samhain among the Celts of ancient Britain and Ireland. November 1 was considered the end of the summer period, the date on which the herds were returned from pasture and land tenures were renewed. It was also a time when the souls of those who had died were believed to return to visit their homes. People set bonfires on hilltops for relighting their hearth fires for the winter and to frighten away evil spirits, and they sometimes wore masks and other disguises to avoid being recognized by the ghosts thought to be present. It was in these ways that beings such as witches, hobgoblins, fairies, and demons came to be associated with the day.

carnival: communal celebration, especially the religious celebration in Catholic countries that takes place just before Lent. Since early times carnivals have been accompanied by parades, masquerades, pageants, and other forms of revelry that had their origins in pre-Christian pagan rites, particularly fertility rites that were connected with the coming of spring and the rebirth of vegetation.
